Training Ramps Up for the Fire Season

On Tuesday 16th November, five brigades came together in one of the region’s largest training exercises. Appliances and volunteers from Yallingup Rural, Yallingup Coastal, Dunsborough, Metricup, and Wilyabrup converged on Will’s Domain Winery for briefing and despatch. More than 50 personnel attended from the five brigades and were deployed for the evening into two sectors, November and Bravo, practising radio communication. and frequent relocations to different locations and zones running out layflat hoses and discharging water to protect assets. Additional incidents were introduced to test the participants, including a simulated burnover in which a truck and crew are faced with intense fire and have to close down the truck into survival mode to survive. The Yallingup Rural Auxiliary members were also in attendance ensuring water refills for the trucks.

This exercise complemented a number of controlled hazard reduction burns earlier in the month including around Meelup and Vasse Siding. These controlled situations also provide essential opportunities for firefighters to hone their skills for call-out situations.
Some of the colourful shots from those exercises are shown below.
